Not too long ago, we compiled a list of the best yakiniku spots in Singapore. However, if you, like me, are looking for a halal-friendly alternative, here’s a place you can check out: Yugo Yakiniku. This hawker stall is run by two ex-delivery drivers, Mohammad Aryan, who is Muslim, and Carol Ting. As the duo are of different races (Malay and Chinese), they were inspired to name their stall ‘Yugo’, AKA ‘fusion’ in Japanese.

The pair fuses Southeast Asian flavours in their yakiniku offerings. For instance, there’s the satay-flavoured Chicken Thigh ($5 per 100g) aside from their range of premium beef cuts.
Another unique ingredient is Dendeng, an Indonesian-style, thinly sliced preserved meat that’s well-loved for its sweet and savoury flavour. Yugo Yakiniku uses it in two dishes: Beef Dendeng ($4 per 100g) and Chicken Dendeng ($3.50 per 100g).

If you’re here for the beef, their Wagyu Striploin ($4 per 50g) comes highly recommended, along with the Kata Rosu ($6 per 100g) AKA chuck eye roll and Karubi ($6 per 100g), which refers to short ribs. At just $15, you can also make it a combo set to enjoy your grilled meat with some lettuce and mushrooms. Do note that they only offer yakiniku on weekdays from 5pm to 10pm, and weekends from 11am to 10pm.

For a hearty meal, you can also go for their donburi bowls, which all come topped with an onsen egg, corn, and Japanese pickles. Many patrons are fond of the Chicken Aburi Don ($5.50), where you’ll find a heap of savoury grilled chicken atop white rice.

Beef lovers shouldn’t miss out on their beef donburi bowls too, which include the Beef Aburi Don ($6.50), Karubi Don ($8), and Wagyu Cube Don ($9.50).
If you’re on the lookout for more halal-friendly grub, check out Kai Siam, a hawker stall offering Thai lok lok, creamy tom yum fried chicken and more! Alternatively, head down to Stack, a Muslim-owned cafe that specialises in loaded sandos.
