The Fuel family has a new member – Fuel X which has opened at the Potong Pasir area of Singapore.
Other cafes under the same group include Refuel Cafe at Bedok Reservoir, Refuel 2 at Bukit Merah and Fuel Plus+ near Harbourfront (16 Wishart Road).
Their 4th outlet is located at The Venue Shoppes near to Potong Pasir MRT station, a mixed development that integrates both residential and commercial units.
Compared to both Refuel Cafe and Refuel 2 that portray a darker theme, Fuel X and Fuel Plus has brighter interiors.
Fuel X is also their biggest outlet to date, with a taller ceiling and spacious setting.
The entire 50 seater-space has a Japanese MUJI-inspired style, being minimalist, simple, and neat.
Neutral colours and the use of natural materials such as wood, cotton and linen help exude a rather zen vibe.
I must say that the chairs are very comfy and well-cushioned compared to the wooden and metal chairs at their other outlets.
The menu is extremely comprehensive, with more than 100 items in store. It also has the most extensive menu that include bestsellers from other sister outlets.
This ranges from Brunch ($12 – $19), Toasties ($16), Mains ($17 – $21), Pasta ($16 – $18), Salads, ($13 – $14), Burgers ($15 – $18), Small Bites ($6 – $12), Desserts ($8 – $18), Coffee ($3 – $6), Tea ($5.50) and Soda ($6).
Most of the items on their menu can be found in other outlets, except the Toasties ($16), X-Ben ($16), and The “X” Burger ($18).
The outlet-exclusive Toasties menu includes Salmon Brie ($16), Cuban ($16), Mushroom Truffle ($16), Chicken Jalapeño ($16) and Banana Peanut Butter ($16).
Sandwiched between two slices of brioche toast, the Salmon Brie Toasties ($16) came with smoked salmon, brie cheese, avocado, cucumber dressing, arugula and tortilla chips with salsa served on the side.
The overall combination was hearty and comforting, with distinctive flavours from the smoked salmon and brie cheese.
The avocado also added some creaminess in contrast to the fluffy brioche toasts.
With 10 brunch items on the menu (which can be a little overwhelming), the X-Ben ($16) stood out among the other 2 Egg Benedict: Pulled Pork Ben ($16) and Cauli-Eggs Ben ($16).
The X-Ben ($16) has quite an interesting combination of ingredients with crispy fish nuggets, slaw, homemade tartar, salsa, tobiko and a single poached egg served on brioche toast.
This tasted just like some fish burger from a certain fastfood chain with flavours from the tartar sauce, slaw and fish nuggets. The main difference was the poached egg that added an additional creaminess dimension.
Perhaps giving the fish nuggets a crispier batter can add some complexity to the textures.
I was spoilt for choices when it comes to the variety of desserts on the menu, including Pancakes – Matcha ($15) and Salted Caramel ($14), Waffle – Red Velvet ($16) and with Ice Cream ($15), Pump It Up Hotcake ($18), Homemade Apple Crumble ($10), Affogato ($10) and Cakes ($8).
The Red Velvet Waffle ($16) was the only “new” dessert there with a change in recipe and a whole new outlook.
The dessert arrived with cream cheese sauce in between the two stack red velvet waffles, while the waffle texture was soft and dense – with a more cake-like texture instead of being light and airy.
Also accompanied with baked apple with cinnamon toppings, strawberries, blueberries and crushed pistachio nuts for a more refreshing bite.
My favourite part of this dish was the matcha ice cream, being creamy and robust with an earthly matcha profile and a distinctive bitterness.
Using a 2-beans blend from Brazil Primavera and Tanzania Karatu Estate, roasted by La Ristrettos for their espresso-based drinks, think Espresso ($3), Latte/ Cappuccino/ Flat White ($5), Hazelnut Latte ($5.50), Caramel Latte ($5.50) and Magic ($5) with soy and oat milk options (+$0.80).
My cup of Flat White ($5) was smooth and robust, with distinctive chocolate notes.
Fuel up your day with Fuel X, it will be an ideal place for gatherings with such a comprehensive menu that can probably cater to everyone.
