Queenstown Lontong in Margaret Drive Hawker Centre
The new Margaret Drive Hawker Centre officially opened on 1 August 2022, following the closure of Tanglin Halt Food Centre. Located at SkyResidences @ Dawson, the two-storey hawker centre houses 38 stalls within its airy interior, and is a 10-minute walk from Queenstown MRT Station. While surveying the area, I was drawn towards the long queue forming at one of the stalls on the first level. It belonged to none other than Queenstown Lontong, known for their delicious, halal-certified lontong.
Although Queenstown Lontong serves other dishes such as mee soto and nasi lemak, we headed straight for their signature Lontong ($4). Each bowl comes with chunky lontong slices, taupok, fried tofu, soft vegetables, and fried coconut flakes.
The best part of this dish is the addictive gravy, which, on my visit, tasted like an in-between of curry and laksa. It was not too spicy when mixed with the shrimp-infused sambal chilli, and was slightly sweet from the coconut milk. Those who prefer stronger flavours might find it on the lighter end, but I liked how it wasn’t too jelak.
Then you get the rice cakes, which soaked up the gravy well and were not overly firm. They also had a slight bite and did not turn mushy even after sitting in the broth for a long time.
There is a pleasant mix of different textures that contrast well in this simple yet satisfying bowl, such as the soft cabbage and crispy fried anchovies. This is one great spot to bookmark for delicious lontong—just make sure you visit during non-peak hours to avoid the lines!
