Not the conventional name for any Bubble Tea shop (in fact any shop), Dont Yell At Me (不要对我尖叫。日常茶间 which hails from Taiwan has opened a Singapore outlet at Orchard Central.
I had to walk past competitor Chun Yang Tea to get to the hand-shaken beverage brand at Level 2 of Orchard Central.
Well, well. Good for consumers I guess, when having choices is better than one.
Known for its Instagram-worthy look, hand-shaken layers, and unusual logo, the brand is co-founded by Taiwanese variety show personality Yako Chan (丫头). It has more than 380 stores worldwide.
I was quite tickled when I watched a couple of her interviews, and more when the server at the Singapore shop spoke in a similar Taiwanese ‘sweetish’ accent.
”Are you Taiwanese by any chance?” She said she was local.
She recommended the “Top 5” choices, which included Winter Melon Chrysanthemum Tea with sweet potato & taro pearls ($5.60), Cherry Blossom and Lychee Sparkling Water with honey white pearls ($6.30), Osmanthus Oolong Tea with cheese cream top ($6.40), Osmanthus Thé Au Lait with black sugar pearls ($6.70), and Grapefruit and Lychee Tea with coconut jelly ($7.30).
Other signatures are the Roselle Honey Chrysanthemum Tea, soothing Four Seasons Green Tea, to dessert-inspired Tiramisu Café Au Lait.
Key ingredients are specially flown in from Taiwan, including its jasmine tea leaves, four seasons green tea leaves and oolong tea leaves.
Prices range from $3.80 to $9, with additional toppings such as Honey Jade Pearls, Brown Sugar Pearls, Coconut Jelly, and Cheese Cream Top.
I went for the best-selling Winter Melon Chrysanthemum Tea ($5.60), and was quite glad at the choice.
Most of us bubble tea drinkers should be more or less familiar with the taste of winter melon (by the way the brew is supposedly air-flown from Taiwan), but the chrysanthemum gave the drink a delicate, floral lift.
What I also enjoyed were the sweet potato and taro pearls (地瓜芋圓) typically found in Taiwanese desserts but not so much in BBT drinks here, and there were deliciously soft with a QQ chewy bite.
Made me keen to try out other drinks some day.
