Chunz Korean corn dogs at Dhoby Ghaut
Here’s another newly opened spot in town to add to your list of places to check out! Malaysian chain Chunz is quickly making waves on TikTok, thanks to its sinfully deep-fried, cheesy, and saucy corn dogs. While corn dogs are nothing novel in Singapore, Chunz impressed us with their Korean-sourced recipes and generous servings.
If getting a sick #cheesepull is your number one priority, order the Mozza Mania ($6.50) that’s stuffed with a thick block of mozzarella cheese. You won’t see any gummy batter here, as each corn dog is thinly wrapped with a sticky yeast dough batter and dusted with panko crumbs before being sent into the depths of hot oil.
To level up your cheesy experience, get it zhnged up with an additional drizzle of nacho cheese or spicy Korean sauce at $1 each.
They also offer options for add-on toppings at the same price of $1, including the viral ramen coating—Curly Crunch. Upon close inspection, we eyed the use of two different kinds of ramen noodles in the mix, perhaps for a clever combination of crunch at each bite.
You can also opt for the Popo Fluff topping for a potato-covered corn dog that’s emblematic of the street food in Seoul.
Our favourite out of the bunch was the Mozza Cheddar ($6.50), AKA the all-in-one corn dog on the menu. It features half a sausage wrapped with sliced cheddar and half a block of stretchy mozzarella.
The sausage in the centre was juicy, sufficiently salty, and flavourful with specks of black pepper dotted all over. It was nothing like the frozen chicken frank I was actually expecting.
Korean food lovers might already know about Gangnam Corndog at Clarke Quay Central, which serves corn dogs on the sweeter side, as each of the deep-fried snack is dusted with sugar. Chunz serves theirs with a wider variety of sauces—more than just ketchup or mustard. They offer mayonnaise, Korean BBQ, and sweet chill, all of which are free on the side.
Yay to us, when overseas F&B brands such as Rotiboy and Chunz start to make their way to our shores. If you’re looking for more Korean eats around town, check out our Obok Dabang review for sweet and savoury croffles that are available till 12:30am.
