With a total of 9 outlets in various parts of Japan such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka, this is Aux Bacchanales’ first international outlet, right here in Singapore.
Taking over the space previously occupied by Eggs ‘n Things at Plaza Singapura, the 60-seaters space exudes a rustic and nostalgic charm, equipped with solid mahogany wood and leather seats.
The entire space is lit up by the overhead hanging orbs along the middle section of the bistro.
(Pardon for the lack of interior shots here as the service crew subsequently mentioned that diners are only allowed to take photos of their food and not the surroundings unless they are from a media publication. So take note when you visit.)
Started in 1995, Aux Bacchanales focuses on French cuisine, known for their daily rotating menu and their open terrace seats in all their outlets where diner can enjoy the scenic and picturesque view of the surrounding foliage.
While all the above are not available in Singapore due to its indoors location, their menu here includes a selection of Salad ($9.80 – $11.80), Soup ($13.80), Entrees ($8.80 – $27.80), Steak Frites ($32.80 – $34.80), Sandwiches ($10.80 – $13.80), Pastries ($7.80 – $11.80), Sweet Crepes ($10.80) and Savoury Galettes ($15.80 – $17.80).
As I was there during tea-time, I decided to try out something light, specifically their Sweet Crepes ($10.80) and Savoury Galettes ($15.80 – $17.80).
Not the first French establishment to offer galettes and crepes in Singapore, I enjoyed the food at both French Fold at Telok Ayer and Gather at Raffles Hotel that set the benchmark for those dishes.
The Galette au Jambon & Champignon ($15.80) comes with mushroom, fried Enoki mushrooms, parmesan cheese, shoulder ham and molten egg yolk on top of the galette.
Unlike the galette at French Fold and Gather that use buckwheat flour to give it a fibrous texture, the crepes here are somewhat softer and fluffier, more eggy and buttery.
The Fried Enoki mushrooms was the surprise element, adding a certain crisp and textures to the otherwise soft and chewy crepes.
The shoulder ham added was decent, giving it a light savoury touch whereas the yolk adds some creaminess to the overall combination.
Among the 2 crepe on the dessert menu: Crepe au Chocolat and Crepe Suzette, I ordered the former that came with a scoop of chocolate ice cream, generous amount of chocolate sauce, whipping cream sprinkled with crushed pistachio and caramelised banana.
Unfortunately, the crepes were a tad too thin and dry, lacking in taste and fragrance.
Perhaps they could use a lighter fresh cream to elevate the overall taste as the whipping cream can be a little too thick and jelak.
Even though their mains are on the pricier side, their in-house desserts: Paris Brest ($9.80), Tart au Citron ($7.80), Tarth au Fruites ($11.80) and Taste Tatin au Creme Chantilly ($9.80) look promising.
Cafe Aux Bacchanales may not be the usual spot for cafe hoppers, with a more formal interior design and a bistro-like menu featuring dishes that are more filling and hearty.
