While there are a number of new burger shops opening up in Singapore, it is heartening to see a home-grown concept expand.
And right in the heart of town.
Burgs is a brand-new fast casual burger concept located at 313@somerset, and make your way to Level 5 next to Food Republic.
Local foodies may be more familiar with the branding of “Burgs by Project Warung”, but this outlet marks something different with an exclusive menu and improved recipes.
For the opening, Burgs will also unveil an exclusive burger drop that is off-menu and will be given out for free for the entire first week of the outlet’s opening to 100 lucky diners a day, while stocks last.
Opened by founders Indra and Ridzuan who used to work in Michelin-star restaurants, they found an opportunity to start a business offering local-style gourmet burgers at affordable pricing.
A Classic Cheese Burger goes at $6.90, while a new Marinara Burger is at $5.90, which is pretty value-for-money considering town prices. With a brand-new menu, here are what you can land your hands on at Burgs:
Burgs Classic Cheese Burger ($6.90 single, 9.90 double)
Burg’s classic burger starts with handcrafted beef patty, American cheese, lettuce and tomato, with a local spin by the addition of pickled green chilli and crispy fried shallots.
Let’s start with the buns: they are customed made and freshly baked from an original recipe. The buns are soft and slightly crunchy on the outside.
They also use the “smashed” style of cooking for their patty. This methods starts with the ball of ground meat flattened on the hot griddle with a spatula. The “smashing” helps create extra browning and flavour on the outside, while maintaining the patty’s juiciness.
The burger is then dressed in house-made signature sauces.
I found this a solid-tasty burger without the frills and thrills, with soft buns and well-seasoned moist patty.
Note that the patty is smashed quite thin for that crisp, but if you prefer more succulence and bite, then go for the double patty.
Also available are Beef Bacon Cheese Burger ($7.50 single, 10.50 double) with pairing of sweet and smokey BBQ sauce; and Marinara Burger ($5.90 single, 8.90 double) with tangy in-house tomato sauce if you prefer a sweetish tinge.
Nasi Lemak Burger ($5.60) seasonal menu
This is a Singapore National Day special, and will only be available for a limited period. Though they should just keep it permanent on the menu.
This includes a whole fillet of deep-fried turmeric chicken dressed with cucumber slices, crunchy ikan bilis and a whole fried egg.
Worthy to mention is the spicy-sweet house-made sambal sauce which helps gels the entire burger together and give it that ”Nasi Lemak” flavour.
Crispy Fish Burger ($7.90 single, 10.90 double)
Not the usual round burger, but a long one consisting of a whole battered Alaskan pollock fish and stacked with lettuce, and Burg’s cheese sauce.
Alaskan pollock is used due to it mild flavour and extremely tender meat, made more wonderful with a garnishing of fresh tomato salsa for that added refreshing tanginess.
Between the beef and the fish, I found the former more impressionable, though this is still a good-alternative for non-beef eaters.
Salmon Roll ($11.90)
A different take on the summertime classic, you get mashed salmon mixed with Japanese mayo dressed within a lightly-grilled buttered coney dog bun.
The fish is premium salmon flown in from Norway, garnished with spring onion for that fresh, grassy bite. Creamy and flavourful, fresh-tasting with contrasting textures.
Chicken Coney Dog ($6.90)
The perfect ‘carnival’ food when you feel like having something ‘nostalgic’.
Nested in a custom-made coney dog bun, the long chunky chicken sausage is topped with a savoury chilli con carne chicken sauce, spiced nacho cheese sauce, and sauteed onion to create a robust-tasting bite.
Burgs’ Chilli Cheese Fries ($5.90)
Moving on to the sides of fries, choose from Original Fries ($3.90), Truffle Fries ($5.90), Burgs’ Cheese Fries ($4.90), as well as the new Burgs’ Chilli Cheese Fries ($5.90).
Deep-fried till golden brown and served in a cup – they still retained their crisp after say 15 minutes of waiting.
I had the Burgs’ Chilli Cheese Fries ($5.90) as this is not served in other outlets, and comes topped with chilli con carne, cheese sauce, chili flakes and spring onions.
Battered Onion Rings ($5.90)
Large white onions and deep-fried in a crispy batter.
Burg’s Nuggies with Cheese Dip ($5.90)
Not the generic-looking nuggets, but nuggets made with real chicken chunks so you would find every piece quite irregular in shape.
The bite-sized chicken chunks coated in a crispy golden batter, are crispy on the outside with a succulent ‘real’ chicken bite.
Served with a cheesy dip on the side.
Lotus Biscoff Soft Serve ($4.90)
Leave some space for the desserts and shakes. The Lotus Biscoff Shake ($5.90) milkshake drizzled with Biscoff sauce is an indulgent and luscious creamy treat. Surprisingly not as sweet as I imagined.
Stir in the sprinkled crushed Biscoff biscuits, and you get a textured bite in between.
There is also a creamy soft serve ice cream option that comes with rich Biscoff cookie sauce and topped with more crushed Biscoff biscuits on top.
Signature Black Lemonade ($4.50)
What is this black drink again? A refreshing lemonade cooler in a sleep bottle tinted stylishly-black with activated charcoal. It tasted like… lemonade.
