Apiary, pronounced as “eh-pee-er-ee”, will not be unfamiliar to many people, with their first outlet located just diagonally opposite to Shake Shack at Neil Road.
4.5 years later, they have opened their 2nd outlet at Jubilee Square in Ang Mo Kio, right next to the entrance of the mall. (Also read: 12 ANG MO KIO Cafes)
The 2-seaters space (you didn’t see wrongly) at Jubilee Square had joined recent openings of ice cream cafe Desert Dessert and AMPM Cafe that serves softserve with egglet in Ang Mo Kio.
Other new openings in that area include Brew & Co. specialising in artisanal coffee and pastries just about 200+ metres away.
Stepping inside, Apiary has a MUJI-like, muted tone, minimalist design and an “Instagram wall” with a small stretch of dried lalang grass for photo-taking purpose.
Here, they served a downsized menu compared to their flagship outlet at Neil Road.
Ice cream similarly priced at $4.20 for single scoop, $8 for double scoops and $11 for triple scoops.
Most of the 18 flavours here are similar to the ones offered at their flagship outlet along Neil Road.
Normal flavours include Coconut, Earl Grey, Black Current Sorbet, Fresh Banana, Blue Milk, Cookies & Cream, Caramelised Strawberry and Fresh Mint.
Premium flavours (additional $0.50) include Black Sesame, Matcha, Ferrero Rocher, 73% Dark Chocolate, Apiary (honey ice cream cacao nibs), Brown Butter & Pecan, Baileys & Brownie, Milk Chocolate & Cookies and Lychee & Yuzu Sorbet.
Do not be disappointed when there are no waffles and brownies here due to the limitation of space.
Instead, you can choose between Cone ($1) or Brioche Bun ($3), the latter exclusive to this outlet.
The Ice Cream with Brioche Bun (from $7.20) came shaped like an UFO with a scoop of ice cream right in the middle of the soft and fluffy sliced brioche buns.
Similar to our childhood memories of how ice cream is sandwiched between 2 slices of bread (Of course those used to cost less than a dollar.)
The brioche buns were lightly toasted and served warm to give a light crisp and a contrast in temperature between the warm brioche buns and the cold ice cream.
Using matcha powder from Leafy Green Tea, the matcha ice cream was smooth and creamy with distinctive and earthy vegetal notes.
Milk crumbles were added to prevent the ice cream from sliding out of the brioche buns, and to give it an additional crunch.
This also resulted in the matcha ice cream becoming sweeter and milkier.
I decided to order double scoops ($8) ice cream and a cone ($1) with 2 contrasting flavours: Caramelised Strawberry and Blue Milk (blue pea flower milk and salt).
What I liked about the Apiary’s ice cream is their textures – smooth, creamy (yet not overly dense) and non-icy.
The Caramelised Strawberry was light in flavour but distinctive with strawberry seeds embedded within it for the extra crunch.
Without being too milky, the overall taste is light and refreshing.
Blue Milk was interesting and had an acquired taste, being salty instead, which helped to balance out the sweetness.
If you enjoy any flavours there, Ice cream pints ($15 – $21) are available for takeaway.
The same 2-beans Apiary Blend (Brazil Fazenda Rodomunho, Naturals and El Salvador) with a nutty, chocolatey tone and hint of honey are used for their espresso-based drinks.
Coffee drinkers can also grab a cup of Espresso ($3), Black ($4), White ($5), Mocha ($6), with options of Iced ($1) and Oatly (+$1) here.
With a strategic location right at the entrance of Jubilee Square in Ang Mo Kio, Apiary serves as a convenient spot for a quick ice cream fix.
