Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodles Maxwell

Finding a hawker stall that maintains low prices is like chancing upon a rare gem. We recently spotlighted $2 carrot cake in Ang Mo Kio, as well as $0.60 satay in Chinatown, and now, joining the list is Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodles, with their $2.50 bak chor mee in Maxwell Food Centre.

Ah Gong Minced Pork Noodles sells bak chor mee made with no MSG, handmade meatballs, and house-made fried shallots. The soup is prepared with tee poh fish, a type of flounder, for sweetness and depth of flavour. A bowl comes served in a claypot, and yes, it’s only $2.50.

Apart from the $2.50 option, you can also get their Signature Claypot Noodles for $4.50, which comes loaded with fried beancurd skin, and handmade dumplings too. Crispy puffs of lard dress the dish for extra shiokness.

The stall is run by an elderly woman who manages it alone. When news of the stall came to light on the Hawkers United 2020 Facebook group, her daughter thanked netizens for praising the stall in the comments. She also shared that her mother’s business suffered a lot due to the pandemic and the multiple restrictions, selling only 10 bowls a day. Yet, instead of making meatballs and dumplings in bulk to freeze and save herself the time and cost, the elderly owner still insisted on hand-making all the ingredients that go into her noodles daily, from scratch.
