It is the time of the year (again!) to celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on 21 September 2021.
If your heart is going for a Mao Shan Wang Durian Snowskin Mooncake, Hai Tien Lo 海天楼 at Pan Pacific Singapore, is bringing this favourite back, complete with a revamped “fine purple jade” exterior. Classy.
There are four other innovative Snowskin mooncake flavours to look forward to this year.
Other than the Mao Shan Wang Durian Snowskin Mooncake, there are the Matcha Black Sesame Snowskin Mooncake; Gianduja Yuzu Snowskin Mooncake; newly launched Mango Passionfruit Snowskin Mooncake and Virgin Singapore Sling Snowskin Mooncake.

Here’s a look at Hai Tien Lo’s Mid-Autumn Signatures and New Flavours:
Mao Shan Wang Durian Snowskin Mooncake ($98.80 per box of 4)
This is Hai Tien Lo’s bestseller for the last four years, and loved for its alluring bitter-sweet durian flesh filling that is lusciously creamy.
Even though I do not consider myself a super-durian fan, I can understand why people enjoy this year after year.
Special mention goes to the snowskin texture, which is soft and springy, almost mochi-like.
The outside is also given a facelift, with a marbled lavender and white skin inspired by purple jade, for that added touch of elegance.
Matcha Black Sesame Snowskin Mooncake ($80 per box of 4)
Back by popular demand, this combines two Japanese-inspired complementary ingredients – matcha and goma (black sesame), a match-made-in-heaven flavour pairing.
With a gold-dusted black charcoal chewy snow skin, this combines aromatic Matcha powder and white chocolate with rich-and-nutty black sesame paste on the inside.
While I thought the ‘matcha-ness’ could be more pronounced, it was overall a filling fragrant and smooth on the palate.
Gianduja Yuzu Snowskin Mooncake ($80 per box of 4)
Chocolate and yuzu? Why not?
When you cut the mooncake open, it would reveal rich and creamy Italian sweet chocolate Gianduja paste made of 64% chocolate and 36% of the world-renowned Piedmontese hazelnuts.
In the centre is a Yuzu crémeux for that sweet and tangy finish, which helps balance the richness on the outside.
Mango Passionfruit Snowskin Mooncake NEW ($80 per box of 4)
For a fruity-tropical treat, the Mango Passionfruit Snowskin Mooncake is filled with tart mango and passionfruit crémeux with cubes of mango confit.
This is packed with a distinctive fruity punch, which did remind me of the Mango Pomelo Sago dessert in a refreshing way.
Virgin Singapore Sling Snowskin Mooncake NEW ($80 per box of 4)
The popular Singapore Sling is known for its well-balanced acidity from the citrus fruits and subtle sweetness.
The Hai Tien Lo chefs have gone for a non-alcoholic take on the Singapore Sling, resulting in a Snowskin Mooncake filled with ingredients such as lime juice, pineapple, cherry and diced pineapple confit.
Small bits of fruits can be found embedded within the smooth, creamy texture of the mooncake, giving it an additional textural contrast. Not your typical mooncake, so may need some getting used to.
Traditional Baked Mooncakes – Pu Er Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake ($80.80 per box of 4)
For a traditional baked mooncake with that touch of tea fragrance, have the Pu Er Lotus Seed Paste Mooncake which pays tribute to the tea-appreciating festival.
Have a scent of the woodsy, earthy, mellow-floral fragrance of quality Pu Er Tea within, then appreciate the blend with velvety-smoothness of the lotus paste.
Other Traditional Baked Mooncakes available include White Lotus Seed Paste ($76.80 per box of 4 for single yolk, $80.80 for double yolk), White Lotus Seed Paste with Macadamia Nuts ($76.80), and Jade Pandan Paste with Melon Seeds ($76.80).
For the health-conscious, good to know that all the Traditional Baked Mooncakes are created lower-in-sugar.
The Jade Pandan Paste with Melon Seeds is actually one of my favourites, with smooth and lightly-sweet paste and delightful pandan fragrance. They are made with real pandan juice extract, with no artificial colourings included.
If you want to try a bit of everything, then go straight for the Four Treasures Baked ($80.80 per box of 4).
The Box
The striking-crimson box is imprinted with ornate motifs of birds and flowers reminiscent of a Chinese painting, also symbolising overflowing luck and happiness.
Adorned with a gold clasp closure like a treasure box, this makes for a presentable gift to business partners and loved ones to commemorate the season, one that can be upcycled for other use.
