A new ice cream café at Midpoint Orchard?
Midpoint Orchard may be located in the heart of town right opposite 313@somerset, but it is not considered very in-the-radar.
Filled with colourful businesses such as manicure, fashion, beauty & slimming and tattoo shops, the mall may not be the first place you head to if you think about waffles.
Note that the Grab drop-off point is at the back of the building, and the Safe Entry leads to the basement (rather than Level 1), so some navigation is needed there.
Play Gelato is a one-month-old gelato and waffles café painted in striking turquoise and white, founded by a married couple with the intention to offer memorable and flavourful gelato.
Interesting, they are focused on single flavour profiles that are rich and creamy, as contrasted to mix of fanciful flavours which are quite popular in recent openings.
Available choices when I visited include Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate, Rum & Raisin, Chocolate Mint, Pistachio, Matcha, Cookies & Cream, Hazelnut, Raspberry Sorbet, Double Belgian and Strawberry Marshmallow.
A scoop goes for $5 for classic, $6 for premium flavours.
Their recommended are the Double Belgian ($6) with chocolate brownie cookies to enhance the texture and taste; and Rum & Raisin ($6) in which the raisins were in soaked in rum for at least 24 hours before the gelato is produced.
I opted for the less-commonly seen Blueberry flavour, which had a gorgeous violet colour and real fruitiness of the fruit (without being artificial) yet not too sweet which make it a summer favourite.
As for the Avocado gelato, it was a smooth, creamy texture though a tad safe choice, and I wished the avocado taste could be more pronounced.
The waffles was not-bad with a saltish tinge (to balance with the sweetness of the gelato) and an old-school savour to it – kind of reminded me of those from the neighbourhood shops.
Also available is a savoury option called the Wafflewich ($4.50). Instead of bread, they use waffles for the sandwich, included with pasta sauce, chicken ham, lettuce and mozzarella cheese.
The price-friendly bite had a delightful crisp and would make a substantial ‘snack’.
My main recommendation was that the pasta sauce tasted too generic (I suspected the brand from that jar) and predictable, and so a mix of sauces or something more homemade would give me more of an edge.
