Tigerlily Patisserie has finally shifted from an online bakery to a brick-and-mortar dine-in shop at Joo Chiat.
This joins the hot #EastCoastPlan with a number of new cafes opened in this area.
The bakery café is located right next to the bright red triple-storey Black Earth Art Gallery, opposite the well-received Da Dong Prawn Noodles.
It is headed by pastry chef Maxine Ngooi from the defunct Michelin-starred restaurant Vianney Massot Restaurant at HongKong Street.
Interestingly, the group behind the concept has just launched Katong Kanteen and is also revamping Chin Mee Chin – all are in the East.
The 20+ seater space is decked in a botanical theme, splashed with bright and cheerful green and yellow colours.
Terrazzo tables tops are used to create more textures whereas the wooden chairs are equipped with tea green cushions.
Tigerlily Patisserie first started off as an online business post Circuit Breaker. It was created to offer baked goods with unconventional flavours, using fine European techniques injected with an Asian spirit.
More than just a patisserie, diners can look forward to Breakfast and Brunch items such as Monsieur Kim ($15), a grilled cheese Croque Monsieur with brie, comte, emmental, chorizo and Kimchi, Salmon Tzatziki ($14) with house-cured salmon gravlax and Build You Own Big Brekkie ($18).
A wide selection of pastries was on display, ranging from interesting and unique savoury options such as Tomato & Artichoke Tart ($7), Asparagus & Leek Tart, Mushroom Bacon Quiche and Garlic Herb & Cream Cheese Babka ($8).
Their uniqueness is the various herbs infused within their pastries such as Chitose Strawberry & Elderflower Tart ($11), Lemon Thai Basil Tart ($8), The Beehive ($11) infused with lemon thyme and Pink Guava & pear ($10) made of elderflower mousse.
The most eye-catching dessert would probably be The Beehive ($11), made from lemon thyme and litchi honey jelly and light lemon sponge encased in a globe-shaped honey parfait, further topped with swirls of yuzu mousse in honeycomb pattern.
This is an intricate piece of art, beautifully crafted visually with a well-balanced sweetness and citrus-ness, light and refreshing without being overwhelming on the palate.
The Pink Guava & Pear ($10) was another signature item, studded with fresh pear cubes and pink guava jelly, encased by a smooth gelatinous layer of pink guava and elderflower mousse.
The Forest Berry Taco ($9) came with crushed hazelnuts at the base, topped with strawberries, blueberries and piped with chocolate cream and chocolate mousse sandwiched between 2 pieces of chocolate taco shells.
A blueberry compote was added to the sides of the chocolate taco shells to cut through the richness of the chocolate, making the taste more refined as well.
While the Pistachio Marimo ($10) might seem like a normal looking green “tennis ball”, it turned out to be one of my favourites.
On the inside of the Pistachio Marimo was a molten core with salted pistachio jam with crushed pistachio, complemented with a smooth layer of pistachio cremeux, on top of a single layer of sponge cake.
There was an ingenious play of textures here, from the pistachio crumble on the surface to the smooth velvety pistachio cream, the rich, molten lava like pistachio in the centre and crushed pistachio nuts embedded.
The overall taste was robust, earthy and nutty, yet without being too sweet.
Using a 2 beans-blend (Colombia and Ethiopian) roasted by Bearded Bella for their espresso-based drinks, the usual items can be found on the menu: Espresso ($4) Black ($5), White ($5) with options of Iced (+$1), Espresso Shot (+$2), Soy and Oat Milk (+$1).
Non-espresso options include Mocha ($6.50), Matcha Latte ($6.50), Chocolate ($7.50), Tea ($6) and Seasonal Cold- Infused Tea ($7).
My cup of Flat White ($5) came with a single espresso shot and was smooth and medium bodied with a darker roast, with distinctive chocolate and acidic berries tasting notes.
Even though I didn’t get to try their brunch menu this time round, their desserts were all refined and well executed with interesting herbs infused within that resonate with their botanical themed layout. Worth a revisit.
