That’s fast. A few months after bakery-cafe Maison Sucreé launched at Lengkok Bahru (Redhill), the team has opened another outlet at Balestier.
It is located along the main road near Whampoa Food Centre, next to Eastern Rice Dumpling.
A little background of the bakery: it is opened by the same team behind Ashes Burnnit at Golden Mile Food Centre (the stall that the Food King team and I awarded 3 stars to).
The head chef Tommy Lim has more than 10 years of experience in the industry, and used to be the head baker at Jones the Grocer. He currently spearheads the production of viennoiserie, breads, and muffins at Maison Sucree.
Every croissant baked is prepared 3 days prior, with ingredients such as natural homegrown levain from Brittany France.
The usual croissants available include Butter Croissant ($3.50), Chocolate Croissant ($4), Almond Croissant ($4.50) and seasonal specials such as Gula Melaka Croissant and Nutella Croissant.
Unfortunately when I visited the Balestier store mid-afternoon, I was faced with sad displays of almost empty-shelves, and was informed ”almost everything is sold out”.
When I asked if there is a difference in bakes between the two outlets, and for a menu to refer to (as there is one at Redhill), I was told to ”just refer to the Instagram highlights”.
I previously tried the Original Butter Croissant ($3.50), and it was delightfully crisp (crispier than many of the famous brands out there) with good amount of fluffiness and buttery aroma.
However, I noted that the Croissant (and even the other bakes) on the display shelf didn’t have that beautiful ‘glow’ and consistency in sizes. It was disappointing to a fan, so hope this is just opening jitters, and that the team will get back that initial momentum.
In terms of tarts and pastries, there are the Lemon Meringue ($7), Chocolate Salted Caramel ($7), Mixed Fruits ($7), Signature Mille-Feuille ($8) and Paris-Brest ($8).
There are also buns such as Coffee Bun ($2.50) – reminding us of Rotiboy; and those with other flavours such as Raisin Bun ($2), Blueberry Bun ($2), Custard Bun ($2), Creamcheese ($3), Chocolate ($3), and Cinnamon Roll ($6).
While there are plated desserts and seats over at the Redhill outlet, this is primary a takeaway-bakery store.
