Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee got mentioned recently in the Facebook Group “Hawkers United – Dabao 2020”, as hawker centres in the CBD such as Amoy Street Food Centre and drink stalls without delivery platforms are most affected by the tightened “Phase 2” measures.
I have recommended quite a number of friends to Ah Seng (Hai Nam) Coffee for old-school Hainanese kopi & toast previously.
How many hawker stalls you know still grill bread over charcoal?
The stall was started by Mr Wong Lock Seng’s father and was previously located at Lau Pa Sat. Unfortunately, Mr Wong aka Ah Seng who was previously helming the stall passed away about 2 plus years ago.
His wife and son have taken over the business.
On the menu are Bread Toast ($1.80), Eggs ($1.40), French Toast ($3.50), Coffee and Tea.
As the bread is prepared over charcoal, you would find the kaya toasts ($1.80 for 2) here with a beautiful brown appearance and lightly crisp texture, complete with a rather eggy and aromatic kaya.
While the brown exterior looked very brittle, it was not as crusty as say compared to Yakun’s – parts of it were quite soft and uneven, but you should enjoy the subtle smokiness and old school flavour.
One of the other signatures is their French Toast ($3.50). Have yet to try it, but I read some online reviews that the bread could have been warmer.
Their Hainanese coffee kopi has slightly bitter notes – I guess this is a perk-me-up for the CBD people around, prepared using with Robusta beans that are ground in-house.
Sometimes I would get their Kopi C (with evaporated milk) which was smooth and ”xiang” (fragrant) – served in nostalgic looking brown cups.
You know how some local kopi can be rather flat, but this has that more layered taste.
As they prepare cup by cup and the toast needs to be grilled properly, do be prepared to wait a little while if they get busy.
