Penang Alley has char kway teow and assam laksa in Buangkok

When we visited the new Buangkok Hawker Centre on the day of its launch, we noticed how a few stalls seemed to draw perennially long queues. One of those is Penang Alley, a stall specialising in classic dishes from Penang, Malaysia.

10 Buangkok Hawker Centre Stalls For Duck Egg Char Kway Teow, Tom Yum MAMA Noodles And More

Penang Alley’s menu is split into two categories. The first, titled “Wok”, features dishes stir-fried in a wok such as Char Kuay Teow ($5.50), Penang Lam Rice ($5.50), and Penang Belacan Fried Rice ($5.50). The second, “Soup”, has dishes such as Penang Spicy Noodle Soup ($5.50), Penang Jawa Mee ($5.50), and Assam Laksa ($5.50). There are also a few sides on the menu, but we’ll get into those later.

Perhaps the most interesting dish at Penang Alley is the Duck Egg Char Kuay Teow ($6.50). This rendition sees duck eggs, rather than your usual chicken eggs, stir-fried with rice noodles and other ingredients. The result is a creamier and richer-tasting plate of char kway teow.

Each plate of char kway teow also comes with ingredients such as prawns, cockles, Chinese sausages and more. Portion-wise, the amount of char kway teow is on the smaller side, so you may want to order some of the sides as well.

Sides here include the Nyonya Spring Rolls (from $3), Sio Bak ($2), Pork Intestines ($1), and Fishballs ($1). Mix and match these to create your ideal char kway teow meal.
