Kim Dae Mun for affordable Korean food in Orchard Road

Orchard Road is not necessarily the first place that comes to mind when you think of affordable food in town. But at Kim Dae Mun Korean Food, a hidden food court-style restaurant located on the first floor of Concorde Shopping Mall, you can find a plethora of yummy Korean dishes priced below $10 nett.

Kim Dae Mun is helmed by Korean chef Kim Hyeon Ju, who started her career in the food industry after graduating from Nanyang Technological University. She took over the business from her father, who used to be a head chef at Seoul Garden.

The restaurant’s most popular item is the Kimchi Soup (Pork) ($9)—a comforting bowl of orange-hued soup packed to the brim with juicy pork, beancurd, onions, kimchi, and egg. It also comes with noodles that’s sure to fill you up. You can choose to swap out the pork for chicken or beef, if you’d prefer.
If you’re choosing from their set menu, your meal will come with your pick of one side dish: Kimchi, Spicy Anchovies, or Spicy Cucumber Salad.

Another noteworthy dish is the Fried Dumplings ($4.50), which is also one of the most affordable items on the menu. This homey dish features crispy Korean mandu stuffed with pork, vegetables, and vermicelli. There’s also a steamed version of the dumplings, which is said to be on the bland side but pairs well with the kimchi soup.

The only rice dish available here is the Bibimbap ($9.50), comprising a bowl of hot, fluffy rice layered with bean sprouts, carrots, chives, spicy gochujang sauce, marinated beef bulgogi, and of course, a gooey sunny-side up.

If you’re into hot plate dishes, try the Tender Sliced Beef ($10.50), featuring chewy and flavourful beef slices served together with rice, vegetables, and soup. There’s also the sizzling Spicy Pork ($10), loaded with spring onions and cabbage, and a dash of chilli powder.
