Ah Yee’s Soon Kueh has traditional soon kueh and png kueh

If you find yourself pining for the traditional flavours of Teochew kueh, do yourself a favour and check out Ah Yee’s Soon Kueh. The snack shop can be found along Tembeling Road, offering a range of old-school eats including png kueh, yam kueh, and of course, soon kueh. All of these treats are made the old-fashioned way: by hand.

The Soon Kueh ($1.60) here is one of a kind. With its silky skin and highly flavourful filling—consisting of dried shrimps, bamboo shoots, turnips, and carrots—it’s no wonder that Ah Yee’s has received so much acclaim for this handmade Teochew treat. Don’t forget to have it with chilli and sweet sauce.

The gorgeously sculpted Peng Kueh ($1.60) is also worth a shot. This peach-shaped snack is particularly delicious because of its fragrant glutinous rice and dried shrimp filling. The rice in particular is said to possess a good bite.

Alternatively, try the Yam Kueh ($1.60). The natural flavour and sweetness of yam elevates this Teochew snack, and as with all Ah Yee’s other kueh, its skin is pleasantly tender and chewy.

Get the Glutinous Rice (from $3.60) if the kueh isn’t filling enough for you. It’s said to be aromatic, and savoury, and crucially, not mushy. There’s a good amount of mushrooms and dried shrimps included in this dish, too.
