Popular Stall At Tanglin Halt Market

Run by Mr Yin Wei Chai, he is actually the younger brother of the owner of Delicious Duck Noodles at the very same hawker centre. The duck noodle stall was first started by Mr Yin’s sister in 1969 while he was still helping his father sell poultry at the adjoining wet market. He then started Wei Yi in the 90s and has been serving up tasty Laksa and Prawn Noodles for over the past 30 years. On top of that, they have been listed in CEO’s Hawker Guide and have also participated in overseas culinary exchanges in Shenzhen and Tokyo.
Unlike your usual laksa which is served with standard ingredients like fish cake, bean sprouts, and cockles, Wei Yi allows customers to customize their ingredients. Choose from six available sets, with each set having a different combination of ingredients including chicken, prawns, tau pok, and cockles.

Served at $6, the Laksa comes with a generous amount of chicken, tau pok, prawns, and cockles. Simply take a sip of the gravy and you will notice the lack of coconut milk. Compared to your usual laksa gravies, Wei Yi’s is slightly thinner, yet there is a decent amount of spice and is still pretty flavourful overall.

As the gravy is lighter than most, you can definitely down the entire bowl without feeling too heavy and jelak, which might appeal to some people. However, for some, you might feel it’s missing an additional oomph to it due to the lacking of coconut milk.

As for the ingredients, they are well-executed which gives the dish a huge plus point. The chicken absorbs the gravy nicely and is pretty tender, yet it has a slight chewiness that gives a good contrast of textures with the noodles. As for the prawns, they are thinly sliced and have a good bite to them.

What stands out are the cockles as they are really fresh and clean tasting. Additionally, the tau pok soaks up the gravy nicely, bursting in flavour as you bite into it.
