High School Kopitiam in Johor Bahru
While Taiwanese high school movies and a trip to Johor Bahru may seem like two completely unrelated things, both stem from a desire to escape from our mundane daily lives. High School Kopitiam, a cafe in JB inspired by Taiwanese high schools, lets you double down on your escapist dreams.
With interiors that look straight out of movies such as You Are the Apple of My Eye and Our Times, this themed brunch cafe in Mount Austin also serves up some delectable fare, including a range of local eats and Instagram-worthy toasts.
The High School Pork Chop Sandwich (RM12.50+/~S$4+) with Charcoal Toast (RM0.60+/~S$0.20+) is definitely one for the ‘gram, with the dark toast contrasting against the oozing yellow yolk and deep brown of the battered pork chop. Shredded veggies, mayo, and cheese make up the rest of the sandwich.
For the perfect money shot, get the Taiwanese Mushroom Coffin Toast (RM13.50+/~S$4.40+). It’s a thick-cut toast filled with a creamy mushroom and chicken sauce, which you can peel open to reveal its inner contents.
Be sure to check out their dan bing, too. Though the Chicken Floss Egg Pancake (RM8.90+/~S$2.90+) isn’t the most authentic dan bing out there, it still makes for a good snack, and is certainly on theme with the cafe.
As for drinks, the most popular one is said to be the High School Special (RM7.20+/~S$2.40+), which is a sweet and milky combination of Nescafe, Milo, chocolate, and coffee for that caffeine kick. If you’re a sugar fiend, this beverage will round out your meal nicely.
