Butler Koffee at Neil Road
Previously operating out of a coffee station at ScubaPeople, Butler Koffee has now found a larger and more permanent location where it now stands at Neil Road. It currently shares its space with Beng Who Cooks, an Asian-Western fusion restaurant that provides the cafe’s brunch menu and operates as a standalone restaurant during the dinner service.
The cafe’s Chinese name, 咖啡罢了 (ka fei ba le), is a pun on “butler”, and translates to “only coffee”. Started by Ms Alicia Yap, Butler Coffee originated as a passion project since her days as a barista when she was studying in the United Kingdom.
Try their signature White ($5), which is their house latte. The beans featured here are sourced from Columbia and roasted by Alchemist, a stalwart in the local coffee scene. Tea options such as the Maple Vanilla Green Tea ($7) and Elder and Cream Black Tea ($7) are also available in pots and are refillable.
For a light snack, Butler Koffee offers a selection of Nuage Patisserie & Boulangerie cakes and bakes. Get the savoury Ham and Brie ($6.5) if you’d like a fluffy, flaky croissant or the classic Pain Au Chocolat ($5).
Although the brunch menu from Beng Who Cooks is quite simple, diners will not go wrong with the sourdough toasts. For an Instagram-worthy dish, get the Smoked Salmon and Caviar Sourdough and Salad ($20) for a burst of colours and umami━though it usually does not come with ikura. Top up another $3 to get the Deluxe Brunch, which comes with an additional sunny side up and mushrooms.
The cosy cafe is dimly lit during the day, with hanging lights just above each table. An eclectic playlist of Mandarin, English and Korean songs plays unobtrusively in the background, which makes Butler Koffee ideal if you just want to relax with a cuppa. There are also a few power plugs located around the cafe, if you’re intending to get some work done there.
