George’s Katong Laksa has been around for almost 49 years and was first started by George’s father, who sadly passed on a few years ago. His father learned the recipe from the famous Janggut Laksa owner and started selling his laksa along the streets even before the hawker centres were built! George has now taken over the stall, with his elder son helping him out occasionally.

A great deal of preparation goes into making this scrumptious laksa! George uses the traditional mortar to make the rempah (spice paste) twice a week, which he then stores in gigantic urns. Additionally, the coconut milk is made daily to ensure the laksa gravy tastes fresh! George wakes up as early as 4.30am daily and goes to the market to buy fresh coconuts! The result is an amazing laksa gravy that customers can’t get enough of!

The Katong Laksa ($4.50) comes with thick beehoon, fresh prawns, fish cake, bean sprouts, and cockles. The fish cake, bean sprouts, and beehoon soaks up the thick and lemak gravy, giving a burst of flavour with each bite! Like your typical Katong Laksa, the noodles are cut into short strands, explaining why you only need a spoon to eat it! The gravy is seriously fragrant and flavourful from all the spices used, with every sip being simply heavenly and well-balanced! On top of that, it isn’t too rich, allowing you to sip every last drop of the gravy without any guilt!

For an extra kick of spice, be sure to add their tasty sambal chilli to elevate your dish! Although George’s Katong Laksa might not be the best in Singapore, it is certainly one of the best around in the East! As they usually sell out as early as 1pm, it’s definitely a good indication of how amazing their laksa is!
