When I think of delicious Japanese food, expensive omakase and Michelin-starred restaurants come to mind. Places like Teppan Kappou Kenji and Tsuta feature really good food, but their price tag leans towards the higher side. Having worked at Eatbook for a while, I realised that Singapore does have really legit Japanese places at affordable price points. If you’re on a budget, here are 15 cheap Japanese food joints under $10 serving halal beef bowls, kopitiam yakiniku and more.
1. Reiwa Soba
Run by a Japanese couple is Reiwa Soba, selling soba dishes that are infused with Thai elements. For example, their Mango Salada Soba ($10) sees a tangy and refreshing marriage between Thai green mango salad and soba.
They also have a rotating Soup Of The Day Soba ($10), one of which is green curry, loaded with chicken, potatoes, eggplant, and chicken liver.

Tucked away in the heart of Maxwell Food Centre lies Ramen Taisho. The owner spent three years in and out of Japan, mastering the art of ramen making, so you can expect really good ramen here.
Their expertise shines in the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen ($7.80), which sees a fusion of creamy pork bone broth and umami-laden black garlic oil. There’s also a spicy alternative, priced at $8.80.

Located in Amoy Street Food Centre, Kinobe is perfect for CBD office workers looking for a hearty meal that won’t break the bank. Try their Gyudon ($7), which comprises fluffy pearl rice topped with well-marinated sliced beef, then crowned with an oozing onsen egg.
The Butadon ($6) is equally scrumptious, with fatty strips of pork conferring a meaty aroma. Pair that with the creamy egg, and you’ll be sure to love this dish.

Keisuke Chicken Yakiniku Tori Yaro recently brought yakiniku to our kopitiams, so you can enjoy Japanese BBQ at hawker prices. For a full meal under $10, get the Kampung Chicken Thigh ($5.90) and add a Rice & Soup Set for $2.50. This chicken thigh is firm with a slight chewiness, pairing well with their house negi-shio marinade. What’s more, each order of meat comes with Keisuke’s trademark marinated bean sprouts and an onsen egg.

Kazoku Japanese Cuisine might appear atas, with their gorgeous cutlery designs and immaculate plating. Yet, you can find cheap Japanese food here, with most of the items priced below $10.
At just $8.90, they have a Salmon Don that is lined with plump slices of fresh salmon. The fresh seafood flavours pair well with the fluffy Japanese rice, made better with a tinge of wasabi. If you’re feeling like something deep-fried, opt for the Mixed Fry Don ($9.90) with breaded prawns, scallops, and oysters.

Buta Kin puts crazy-expensive ramen shops to shame. Their soup base is impressive, boiled for hours with pork and chicken bones.
Get the Special Tonkotsu Ramen (from $7.50), which presents you with three thick slices of chashu. Each slice is melt-in-the-mouth, highlighting a golden ratio of fat to meat. If you prefer some heat in your ramen, their Tonkotsu Red Ramen (from $6.50) makes for a good alternative.

At Kazan Japanese Cuisine, you can expect cheap Japanese food that’s both good in quality and generously portioned.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find anywhere that serves Unagi Don with such an impressive portion at just $8.50. The unagi is steeped in a rich teriyaki sauce and broiled until it’s tender.
Their Oyakodon ($5.50) is another noteworthy option, with a chicken katsu cutlet drenched in an onion and egg sauce.

Portions at Konomi Zen are huge. At just $6, the Salmon Bento Set gives you a gigantic slice of salmon, seared to a nice char.

Ramen doesn’t have to be a splurge at ATO Ramen, where you can get Dry Minced Pork Ramen for $6.90. This bowl of ramen reminded us of mazesoba, topped with an oozy yolk for extra creaminess.
Purists can opt for the Signature Tonkotsu ($9.90), which comes complete with black fungus, chashu, spring onions, and an ajitama egg. If you’re not feeling like ramen, their menu also sees wallet-friendly rice dishes such as the Gyoza Ebi With Rice ($6.90) and Tori Katsu With Rice ($9.90).

Their Smoked Duck Ramen ($7.50) is also worth a shot with a generous portion of smoked duck complementing the light ramen broth.
