1. So Good Char Chan Tang

So Good Char Chan Tang is the place for affordable Hong Kong cha chaan teng dishes. This laid-back café offers budget-friendly set meals priced under $6, This includes their BBQ Meat Value Set ($6), where you get to choose between roasted duck, char siew, soy sauce chicken, or steamed chicken served on rice, noodles, or hor fun, and your choice of a drink. Swing by during tea time, which falls between 2:30pm to 5:30pm, and you get to dig into the Polo Bun Set ($3.50), served with their wildly popular butter polo bao. This cheap restaurant in Singapore has six outlets: Midview City, Capitol Piazza, 100AM, Republic Plaza, i12 Katong, and 111 Somerset.

2. Milan Shokudo

If Saizeriya is a regular on your cheap restaurant roster, make sure to include Milan Shokudo as well. This Junction 8 spot offers a Japanese-Western twist on Saizeriya’s beloved concept, so you get a wide variety of dishes priced under $10. The menu here spans Japanese-fusion pasta, pizza, as well as meats and dorias. It’s worth noting that the pasta here is made fresh to order. Highlights include their Japanese Clam Pasta ($5.90++), and their Smoked Duck Carbonara ($10.90++)—a little over our $10 price cap for this article, but it’s worth that little bit extra.

3. 2KulGuyz

Another cheap handmade pasta restaurant in Singapore is 2KulGuyz, a Muslim-owned establishment by an ex-hotel chef in One-North. The pasta here is all made by hand, in-house, and includes colourful pasta options dyed with pink grapefruit and blue pea. Though most of their pasta dishes come in under $20, you have an under $10 option in the form of their Beef Rendang Lasagna ($9.90+)—cheesy, and packed with flavour thanks to the moreish rempah the minced beef is cooked in.

4. MTR Singapore

MTR Singapore is an extremely popular vegetarian Indian restaurant, often sporting long queues during breakfast and brunch hours. The menu here is sprawling, lined with handmade idly, dosa, and various other snacks, all priced under $10. We suggest getting their Pudi Masala Dosa ($7), one of their bestsellers. You get a tangy, crispy thosai folded over spiced potatoes, served with mint chutney and lentil sambahr. Pair your meal with a Masala Tea ($3) or their signature Filter Coffee ($3), a frothy milk coffee recipe with South Indian roots.

5. Azmi Restaurant (Norris Road Chapati)

Azmi Restaurant is a legend in Singapore’s dining circuits, as they serve, hands down, one of the best chapatis you can get. Made fresh and griddled to order, diners can expect fresh, slightly dense chapati rounds, priced at just $1.20 each, best enjoyed with some of their curries. The Mutton Keema ($4) and the Chana Masala ($2) are two of the most popular picks.

6. Ah Lock & Co

Ah Lock & Co is beloved CBD lunchtime spot. They’re best known for their Hakka grain bowls, of which some are priced under $10, as well as their thicc min jiang kueh. The Hakka Signature Rice Bowl ($8.80) is one of the more popular options—this is like an upgraded lei cha, and is served with crispy tofu, meatballs, and a selectuon of veggies atop short grain rice. If you’d like noodles instead, try the Hakka Bee Hoon Soup ($8.80) an Ampang yong tau foo spin. Don’t forget to end off your meal with their min jiang kueh, available in all the usual flavours: peanut, coconut, red bean and black sesame, priced from $1.60.

For one of the most budget-friendly Korean dining experiences along Orchard Road, look no further than Kim Dae Mun. A must-try is the Pork Kimchi Soup ($9.50)—a generous serving of kimchi stew packed with pork, tofu, cabbage, onions, and glass noodles. You also should also try their hotplate dishes, which start at $10, or their Bibimbap ($10), served with a medley of colourful, well-seasoned toppings, and a sunny-side-up egg.

8. Nhung Kitchen

Nhung Kitchen is a legit and cheap Vietnamese restaurant in Balestier that serves up banh mi till 3am. It is run by the founder, Nhung, a Vietnam native, and her husband, Thomas. Their banh mi are mostly under $8, with the popular choice being the Banh Mi Thit Nuong ($6.90), packed with barbecued pork, lettuce, cucumbers, carrots, and pickled radish and a selection of fresh herbs. If you prefer a hot main, the Bun Thit Bo Xao ($8.90) is one of our faves—this classic rice noodle salad is topped with fragrant stir-fried beef, crisp veggies, and rice noodles, all to be tossed in a spicy-sweet fish sauce dressing.

9. Katsu-an

Another famous Japanese franchise that has set up shop in Singapore is Katsu-an, a franchise with over 50 outlets across Japan. Their Suntec City restaurant is their very first outlet beyond Japan too! As katsudon specialists, Katsu-an serves up an array of fried cutlet dishes. This includes their signature  Katsu Don, available at just $5.90 for a medium serving. Each bowl comes with sweet pearl grain rice, eggs cooked with onions and in dashi, as well as a crispy-fried katsu cutlet. If you’d like to upsize, the L portion is only $7.50, while the XL serve comes in at $9.50.

10. Ordinary Burgers

Ordinary Burgers levels up your usual fast food fare without major spikes in price. This homegrown chain has a small handful of outlets islandwide, but each promises great value for money and quality too. Most of their burgers are priced under $10, with fish, chicken, beef, and even vegetarian options to pick from. Some of their burgers are also upgraded dupes of McDonald’s seasonal specials, like their Ebi Mayo ($11.40), for example. If you’re spoilt for choice, the Buttermilk Chicken ($9.20) is our fave, and comes with a super juicy, crispy fried chicken patty.

11. Thai Tantric

Orchard Towers’ sleazy reputation be damned, because it does have some of the cheapest eats along Orchard Road. Thai Tantric is one example. This hidden gem is run by Thai locals, so you know you’re getting the good stuff. Tucked away in the corner of level three, the casual restaurant serves up delicious Thai fare that won’t break the bank. Noodles and rice dishes here are typically under $10, but you can also choose to get mains, typically priced around $12 to $15, to share with friends so you can split the bill, but order a variety fo their signatures.

12. Banh Mi Thit

Banh Mi Thit is one of the OG banh mi spots in Singapore. Nestled in Joo Chiat, this eatery is celebrated for its incredibly budget-friendly banh mi, available at just $5. You have the freedom to choose between pork, chicken, ham, beef, egg, or pate as your filling. Once you’ve picked, it gets packed into a house-baked baguette along with pickles and herbs. For an extra dollar, you can get your sandwich with a beverage of your choice, such as the Iced Authentic Vietnamese Coffee, usually priced at $1.80.

13. Little Teahouse

Soup Restaurant has branched out into cheap dim sum with their new Little Teahouse opening, located at Bugis Village. There are over 35 handmade dim sum items here to pick from, all nett prices, with most coming in under $5. Try their Samsui Ginger Chicken Bao ($4.60), which uses Soup Restaurant’s signature as a filling for a fluffy bao bun. Another delicious pick is the Crispy Prawn Cheong Fun ($6.90), which you can enjoy as a standalone main. This is your usual cheong fan dish, albeit with crispy instead of steamed shrimp.

You may know of Breakfast Club from their Kovan hawker stall, where they serve up Western brunch and big breakfast for cheap. They’ve also got a Tiong Bahru Plaza restaurant, with more dine-in spaces and air conditioning. You can get fluffy Pancakes ($7.50) here to start your day, or dig into Western mains, such as Chicken Cutlet, Chicken Chop, or Fish & Chips, priced at $9.90. If you don’t mind a bit of a splurge, the Omelette & Rosti Hash ($11) is worth the try—you get an omelette packed with cheese, ham, and bacon, served atop crispy rosti hash.

15. Ollella Far East Square

Ollella, renowned for their legit kueh and hearty Indonesian mains, first made waves in Cluny Court two years ago , but they have since relocated to Far East Square. Mains under $10 is a rare find in the CBD’s restaurants, but Ollella delivers with the likes of its Lontong Sayur ($5.80), a rich coconutty veggie curry with rice cakes, and their Nasi Lemak Sambal Hijau Ayam Berempah ($7.80), served with marinated cubes of fried, spiced chicken.
