When it comes to curry fish head in Johor Bahru, one place stands out above the rest: Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head. This legendary eatery has been around since 1983, serving up its excellent dishes to Malaysian and Singaporean customers for generations.

A mere five-minute walk away from Johor Bahru City Square, Kam Long Ah Zai Curry Fish Head regularly draws long queues. Since it opens from eight in the morning till the late afternoon, you can choose to dine here for breakfast or lunch.
A pot of Curry Fish Head here starts from just RM31/~S$8.80. The picture you see above is a medium-sized pot that cost us RM44/~S$12.50, and while the portion wasn’t exactly generous, we enjoyed the flavours and quality of ingredients in it.
You’ll find that the curry is piquant and flavourful, but also not too spicy, oily, and jelak—in other words, it is quite well-balanced. Ingredients such as cabbage, beans, and ladyfinger feature in the thick curry broth. Free zai er AKA crispy beancurd skin is provided as well, and we recommend you add it to the pot of curry.
As for the fish head, many have remarked that it is fresh, clean-tasting, and fall-off-the-bone good. The only issue we found was that it wasn’t descaled properly, and for a “medium” portion, we thought there wasn’t enough fish meat.
Be sure to enjoy the fish with a plate of Rice (RM1/~S$0.30) for the ideal curry fish head experience.
To cut through all the flavours, get the Dragon Fruit Juice (from RM8/~S$2.30). With its refreshing burst of tropical sweetness with a hint of floral notes, this drink is perfect not only for curry fish head, but also the hot JB weather.
