Treasure Toast is Bao Er Cafe’s sister outlet in Bugis

Kaya toast and hokkien mee fans will undoubtedly be familiar with Bao Er Cafe, a popular stall in Balestier. Now, the people behind the brand have opened Treasure Toast, a sister outlet to Bao Er.

You’ll find it along Purvis Street, right opposite the National Library.

Bao Er Cafe: Ya Kun-Dupe Kaya Toast, Wok Hei Hokkien Mee And More In Balestier

Their Homemade Kaya Butter Toast Set ($6), which comes with a choice of hot kopi or teh and two soft-boiled eggs, includes four slices of kaya butter toast that might just surpass those from Ya Kun.

Treasure Toast’s house-made kaya is delightfully creamy and has a richer, more buttery flavour than you’d expect—not because it contains more butter, but because the butter used in their toast is particularly aromatic. The kaya spread has just the right amount of sweetness, with a discernible pandan fragrance. Whether it’s genuinely better than Ya Kun Kaya Toast, that’s for you to decide!

Be sure to also try the hokkien mee. You’ll find the same Signature Fried Hokkien Mee ($8.80) that Bao Er is known for here, which is full of umami goodness and wok hei.

The fried hokkien mee also features a generous amount of fried pork lard. The pork lard came in particularly huge chunks, which completed the dish with a satisfying burst of a nice fatty flavour.

For those who prefer customising your dishes, you can mix and match items such as Fried Bee Hoon ($2.90), Luncheon Meat ($1.50), Sunny Side Up Egg ($1.50) and more. Be sure to try their chilli, which packs quite a punch with a light zest.

You could also pair your bee hoon with other a la carte side dishes, such as a Fish Fillet ($1.60), Handmade Fish Cake ($1.80), Crispy Prawn Cracker ($2.30) and more!
