Go Big on Bites at AMK Hub is a new food fair that runs till 11 August
AMK Hub has been on a roll with food extravaganzas such as the recent durian buffet, but there’s none quite like Go Big on Bites, a food fair that is said to be the first of its kind. This is because the fair has all kinds of jumbo eats that will whet even the biggest of appetites—a giant mocktail, an enormous hotdog and more. You name it, and they probably have it.
The food fair runs till 11 August 2024, so there will be plenty of time for you to check out the different vendors. On the first day itself, the fair attracted quite a crowd especially from people living around the area, so be prepared to face a throng if you’re planning a trip down!
What made this food fair really pop, though, were the food trucks headed by home-based businesses such as Fruitty Empire, Mr Noh Food SG, and Kueh N Rolls.
The sun was really beating down on us, so we made a beeline for the cold drinks at Fruitty Empire. The stall mainly sold drinks, but they also had other snacks such as tahu bergedil, diced fruits, and corn in a cup.
The vendor sold their Giant Fruit Mocktails ($5 each) in a variety of flavours such as Mango, Blueberry, Grape, Honeydew, and Strawberry. After much thought, we got the Mango which was the perfect quencher. Fruit mocktails aside, the stall also sold an interesting drink concoction which reminded me of hwachae: a Korean dessert featuring a mix of fruit and milk that’s typically eaten in summer.
Next, we tried the Jumbo Mozzarella Hotdog ($5) which consisted of a larger-than-normal chicken sausage, topped with minced chicken or beef, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, and shredded mozzarella cheese, all neatly packed in a hotdog bun.
The hotdog was drizzled with a mixture of sauces: nacho cheese, and kicap manis. The combination of ingredients and sauces reminded me of a Ramly burger, but in hotdog form.
We tried the colourful Big Paw next. The bao came in sets of four for $10 and three for $8. The fruit and vegetable-shaped bao saw flavours such as durian, prawn, mushroom, and corn, which was adorable. I found this idea really smart as you don’t need to tear the bun into half to check the filling within. Also, they were really soft as they were steamed on the spot!
The same stall also sells fried lok lok skewers that come in a set of four pieces for $12 and fish satay priced at $5 for 10 pieces.
Other than the mega-sized food items, we also got to try Kueh N Rolls, which sold a wide selection of gimbap and kueh. When I got the chance to talk to the vendors—who were the only younger bunch in a pool of older vendors—I found out that they occupy a stall in Republic Polytechnic at the Lawn Food Court selling the same items.
They had various types of gimbap fillings such as Marinated Beef ($10), Marinated Chicken ($9), Tuna Mayo ($9), Chicken Hotdog ($8), and Folded Egg ($8). You can also choose from a variety of sauces to dip your gimbap in: honey dijon mustard, chilli mayo, wasabi mayo, and sesame pepper.
Alongside the traditional kueh offerings such as pandan coconut, glutinous rice with coconut, and rainbow kueh lapis, they also have a modernised kueh lapis that sport various hues of purple and blue. It was made using lychee, raspberry, and blueberry which tasted like berries to us! Each piece is priced at $1.20.
Lastly, we ended our experience with what I consider a food fair staple: Sweet Potato Balls ($5). These chewy snacks tasted even better when eaten freshly fried, and hot on the spot.
Go Big on Bites is situated right outside of the main entrance at AMK Hub that’s within spitting distance of Ang Mo Kio MRT Station. Other than the various food trucks, there is also a bouncy castle that children get to play in for free with a minimum amount spent on food items. The food fair opens until 9pm or 10pm, so drop by when you can.
