The Sandwich Guys has loaded sandwiches in Raffles Place
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) alumni will definitely know of The Sandwich Guys, an eatery selling loaded USA-inspired sandwiches on campus. A lack of foot traffic during the pandemic probed owner Edwin Chan and his team to move out of the far west to One Raffles City. With this move, Edwin hopes to reach out to the office crowd, and let more people know about his sandwiches, or what he calls ‘meatwiches’.
Although they have changed their location, their menu is still generally the same. They’ve kept their best-selling signature sandwiches, particularly the Pastrami ($14) and the Cheesesteak ($9.50). For those who do not eat beef, they also have the BBQ Pulled Pork ($7.50) and Cubano ($8.50).
Meat lovers, the best-selling, New York-inspired Pastrami meatwich is definitely for you! Two slices of Pullman white bread are stuffed with smoked beef brisket and a house-made mustard beef gravy, making this sandwich extremely indulgent and filling.
My colleague and I agreed that the beef was seasoned well. However, we felt that the beef was too dry for our liking and a little difficult to swallow. Regardless, the saving grace was the mustard beef gravy—it added some dimension to the dry beef, and I enjoyed how the mustard’s tanginess went well with the beef.
If you’re a cheese lover, I would recommend trying the Cheesesteak. It contains roast ribeye slices, onions, jalapenos, cheddar, mozzarella, and nacho cheese sauce, all sandwiched between a hoagie roll, similar to a French baguette. I liked the addition of the jalapenos—it prevented the meatwich from feeling too jelak and added a mild spiciness to it.
To cater to the office crowd, The Sandwich Guy has also launched breakfast items available from 8am to 11am. Some offerings include the Breakfast Burrito Wrap ($4.90), Classic Deli Muffins (from $4.50), and the Breakfast Egg Sandwich (from $4). For the latter, you can pick your preferred topping and your choice of bread.
Besides the above-mentioned, you can also Build-Your-Own-Meatwich from $7.50. Topping choices include pulled pork, piri piri chicken, and smoked salmon, to name a few. Customise it to your liking with their huge variety of ingredients! You might have to wait for a while as the sandwiches are freshly prepared upon order.
The Sandwich Guys are relatively new in the CBD area, so give them some support if you’re around the area or if you’re craving some savoury-loaded sandwiches!
