Siong Tong Gai opens in Singapore with famous steamed fish

If you love seafood, you have to check out Siong Tong Gai at 313 Somerset. Founded in 2008, this popular Malaysian restaurant is best known for their fresh steamed fish, cooked in a premium broth. They also have other seafood options including prawns and clams, alongside classic zi char fare!

First-timers should try their signature Steam Three Treasure ($33++), which comprises fresh prawns, squid, and clams. Do note that you’ll have to top up for fresh fish, which will be charged by weight.

Alternatively, you can opt for their Signature Steam Fish instead, served in a simmering hotpot with a secret soup base. Choose from options such as Signature Steam Patin ($7.80++/100g) and Steam Black Tilapia ($4.80++/100g), or splurge on the Signature Steam Soon Hock ($9.80++/100g), the most expensive fish on the menu.

Regulars tout the fish to be fresh and sweet, complementing the flavourful, ginger- and garlic-packed soup. FYI: the founders of the Malaysian brand have been working on the broth for over 30 years!

Besides fish, you can get other seafood items such as Steam Clams with Egg ($12.80++ for regular, $16.80++ for large) and Indonesian Curry Clams ($12.80++ for regular, $16.80++ for large).

Their Oat Prawn ($25++ for regular, $36++ for large) AKA mai pian xia is another familiar favourite, pairing fresh and juicy prawns with crispy oat clusters.

That’s not all: Siong Tong Gai also offers other zi char-style dishes including Sweet and Sour Popcorn Pork ($16.80++ for regular, $23.80++ for large), great for sharing among the table. The pork chunks, said to be crispy on the outside and tender within, are tossed in a sweet and sticky sauce right before serving.
