Nickel is a cosy cafe with gorgeous desserts in Rochor
Previously known as Lee’s Confectionery, Nickel is a cosy cafe tucked away in a corner along Middle Road. It’s also a quick five-minute walk from Rochor MRT Station!
It has already been more than five years since we visited their OG branch in Jurong, so we were excited to try their newest offerings, especially the gorgeous selection of desserts and pastries.
We started with the most popular—and also the most expensive—item, Otto ($16).
This one’s for pistachio lovers: it’s mainly made of pistachio mousse and pistachio praline within a thin layer of chocolate encased in two pieces of almond tart shells. You also get a lovely surprise of an orange almond cake in the middle of this dessert!
Next, we moved on to the pretty Madu ($12). While Otto leans nutty, this one’s sweeter and creamier than anything else.
The hexagonal dessert features a cornflake crumble base with Horlicks cream and honey caramel, covered with caramelised white chocolate.
If fancy desserts aren’t your cup of tea, there are viennoiseries for your consideration. There were five pastries to choose from during our visit, and we decided on the KayAmann ($5.50). This is essentially a kouign amann of sorts filled with an Earl Grey kaya in the core of it. FYI, the jam is said to be house-made!
The crispy pastry crust is coated in cinnamon sugar, which pairs well with the sweet and fragrant Earl Grey kaya filling.
Bakes aside, we got a cup of their Dirty Matcha ($8). This earthy and slightly glassy drink is made with matcha, espresso, and soy milk. If this isn’t your preferred milk choice, worry not as dairy milk and oat milk options are available as well.
Nickel is cosy and compact, housing less than 20 dine-in customers at once. The space is mostly adorned in warm hues of brown without any loud or bold decorations, which makes you feel at ease as soon as you step into the cafe.
Their desserts aren’t the cheapest, but thankfully, prices are nett here. If you’ve been looking for a space away from the city noise, Nickel is one for the books.
