Fried Rice Story has halal Din Tai Fung-style egg fried rice

Din Tai Fung-style egg fried rice was everywhere for a while, and it seems like the trend is still going strong. While there are stalls helmed by ex-DTF chefs aplenty, there’s also Fried Rice Story, headed by a trio who have never worked for the xiao long bao chain. Fried Rice Story is also halal-certified!

Food at Fried Rice Story

One of their founders is Thai, which gives rise to some Thai items on the menu, including Jumbo Crab Meat Omelette ($12), inspired by the viral Jay Fai omelette in Bangkok.

Cooked till barely set, it comes studded with lumps of real crab meat!

It’s paired with a green, Thai-style seafood chilli that’s both tart and spicy: the perfect accompaniment for the crab meat omelette.

Other than the classic, Fried Rice Story has three other variants—mala, truffle, and teriyaki egg fried rice. Whichever base you go for, there are six kinds of toppings you might opt for, with prices starting from $6.90 a plate.

One of these is Chicken Katsu (from $6.90), topped with a savoury, lightly spiced deep-fried chicken cutlet. On our visit, we found the meat of this a touch dry and stringy, though the batter was nicely tasty.

Even if you skip the mala version, you can always add some of their provided crispy chilli to your egg fried rice—this is prepared with pearl rice, and while evenly tossed through with egg, is on the blander, drier side.

For something not spicy, but more flavourful than egg fried rice, go for the teriyaki series, with Grilled Scallops ($8.90) and a dollop of crunchy tobiko.

Unlike the teriyaki dishes you might have encountered, this teriyaki fried rice is more savoury than sweet and sports a more distinct wok hei.

Considering it’s sub-$10, you still get four smallish pieces of grilled scallops which, when we had them, were slightly overcooked.

The last item we tried was Braised Beef Truffle Egg Fried Rice, which also rang in the till at just $8.90.

This came with a whole lot of braised beef shin slices, laced through with lines of gelatinous connective tissue. Braised in-house, this was rather tasty and sufficiently tender.

Fried Rice Story doesn’t stinge on the truffle oil; their truffle egg fried rice is quite heavily scented with it, though the flavour doesn’t come through as strongly when you actually get around to eating the rice. Overall, this doesn’t make the dish overly jelak, though, like the other two fried rice dishes we tried, this erred on the dry side.

Apart from the crab omelette and fried rice, you could also go for Mantou with Condensed Milk ($4.90) or Hot Wings with Thai Seafood Sauce ($5.90).

Ambience at Fried Rice Story

We visited the Bukit Merah outlet of Fried Rice Story, which is a 17-minute jaunt away from Tiong Bahru MRT Station on foot, or 11 minutes by bus. Located in a rather newly renovated food court under an HDB block, the space is clean and brightly lit, with lots of tables both within the food court and outside.

The verdict

I see the appeal in Fried Rice Story’s wallet-friendly dishes, with portion sizes that make them a quick meal fix for people living nearby. There are also sufficient choices so you don’t have to end up eating the same fried rice with the same toppings all the time. While drier than I would like, this means it’s less oily and thus less of a guilty indulgence.

If you prefer scrambled eggs on rice, check out Kovan Scrambled Egg Rice, which dishes up similar fare as the popular Danlao. Else, there’s also Tai Feng Wei for DTF-style fried rice and Taiwanese nosh!
