Big Short Coffee is a new cafe in Joo Chiat
There’s a new kid on the Joo Chiat block: Big Short Coffee, a specialty coffee bar that’s been gaining online traction for its innovative lineup of beverages.
Despite being relatively new to the scene, the cosy spot has become rather popular with coffee aficionados and cafe-hoppers who are looking for something different.
Their drink menu appears to be seasonal, created with techniques and ingredients that are not commonly used in coffee. I think this is what makes them stand out from the plethora of cafes in the Katong area.

We tried four beverages from their latest Autumn series: Happy Valley Punch ($8.50), Little Black Sheep ($8), Mont Blanc ($8), and Warabi Mochi ($8.50).
Start with Happy Valley Punch, a light blend of espresso, blood orange, bergamot, Earl Grey, and clarified coconut milk.
Little Black Sheep is another refreshing mix, consisting of cold brew, honeydew, passionfruit, and gula melaka, spiked with purple shiso for a mildly herbal finish.
For an aesthetically pleasing drink that screams fall vibes, look no further than Mont Blanc, where cold brewed coffee is topped with vanilla bean cream, nutmeg, orange zest, and Mauritius muscovado sugar for a deep sweetness.
Otherwise, the Warabi Mochi is another delicious pick, starring espresso and kinako cream with house-made warabimochi and Okinawa black sugar. The beverage is garnished with ito togarashi AKA Japanese chilli threads, known for its mildly fruity flavour and gentle warmth.
Big Short Coffee has limited seats, so we recommend visiting on a weekday when it’s less crowded.
The cafe is a nine-minute walk from Marina Parade MRT Station, or a 10-minute bus ride from Mountbatten MRT Station.
Another cosy cafe in the area is Same Days Coffee, hidden in an atas furniture store in Joo Chiat. Alternatively, read all about Cafe Kitsune’s new matcha menu, available from now till 1 November 2024 only!
