Must-Try Hokkien Mee Stall At Bukit Batok
The Neighbourwok is currently run by 34-year-old Kelvin Teo, who only opened his stall last year in June. Despite opening his stall right in the middle of Circuit Breaker, The Neighbourwok has already garnered immense popularity among the Westies. Definitely not an easy feat to achieve! One unique feature about the stall is that they serve satay alongside their Hokkien mee! Most Hokkien mee stalls usually serve other “wok” dishes such as carrot cake and char kway teow, but not for this stall! Kelvin drew inspiration from his father who used to run his own satay stall back in the day and decided to serve it at The Neighbourwok as well.
What makes a good Hokkien Mee? The most important is the strong prawn stock flavour. Some Hokkien Mee stalls might use chicken or pork broth which affects the overall taste of the dish. Next, the noodles have to be perfectly cooked and wok hei has to be present. Pair the wok-hei fried noodles infused with the flavourful prawn stock with some spicy sambal chilli and you have the perfect plate of Hokkien Mee!
The Hokkien Mee ($4) served at The Neighbourwok is more on the wet side, but not too soupy. Each plate comes with a generous portion of noodles, pork belly, sotong, prawns, and a sprinkle of pork lard to complete this tasty dish. The noodles are cooked well and are infused with the flavourful stock, giving a burst of umami with every bite! Additionally, the wok hei isn’t too overpowering, giving a good blend of smokiness with the prawn stock. Mix it with the chilli for some added spice and sweetness! Definitely a tasty plate of Hokkien Mee!
