Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice is opening at VivoCity

One of Singapore’s favourite Hainanese curry rice spots is Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice, an institution that’s been around for more than 90 years. Last year, they became slightly more accessible when they opened a stall in ION Orchard’s Hawker Street; next month, they’re set to launch their very first independent mall outlet at VivoCity!

If you’ve never made the trip to Beach Road, here’s the lowdown on this unpretentious shop’s winning points. First of all, they’re open from 11am to 3am every day of the week, making them a hot favourite with supper crowds. We’re not expecting the same late hours at their upcoming VivoCity eatery, however, so you might still need to head to the OG Beach Road outlet for late-night cravings.

Then, there’s the food: you start with a plate of plain rice, then go about picking your choice of ingredients. One of the most distinctive sounds you’ll hear upon entering the shop is the metallic clash of snapping scissors as they snip up your food, which is where they get their name from.

The quintessential picks include lor bak, breaded pork or chicken cutlets, deep-fried sunny side-ups, and chap chye.

There are also various other dishes you could pick, including curry chicken wings, stir-fried vegetables, fishcake, and the like.

The finishing touch on every plate is their thick, viscous curry, plus the equally sticky-looking lor bak braising gravy. It’s dashed onto each plate with careless abandon, epitomising the phrase ‘ugly delicious’.

Keep an eye on their Instagram page for more updates on the VivoCity outlet’s opening details. While you wait for them to open down South, check out our guide to eating curry rice in Singapore.
