Mention Serangoon food and my friends will list of NEX food options, but as much as we love going to the mall, this neighbourhood has more to offer. 1. Flavour Flings

Flavour Flings is the place to head to when you want unique Western fare that’s also halal. They were the mastermind behind salted egg yolk croissants, and loaded raclette cheese mains. Get their Salted Egg Croissant With Raclette Cheese ($9.90) for a double win, or Beef Steak With Raclette Cheese ($27.90) for gooey cheese atop tender meat.

2. The Plain Jane

If you’re a fan of swiss rolls, The Plain Jane has got just the thing for you. You can start with their signature, The Plain Jane ($4.90), or not-so-plain flavours such as Thai Milk Tea ($5.90) and Matcha ($5.90). The swiss rolls go well with their Flat White ($5), and they also offer interesting teas such as Mango Sticky Rice ($6/$8 for a pot) for the more adventurous.

3. Kooks Creamery

Specialising in molten lava cookies, Kooks Creamery puts a creative spin to the traditional lava cake. With over 18 ice-cream flavours to pair your lava cookie with, you won’t be running out of choices and combinations anytime soon. We love how the Matcha Lava Cookie Set ($9.50) balances the slight bitterness of matcha and the sweetness of cookie butter ice cream—truly a match made in heaven.

4. Ciel Patisserie

Ciel Patisserie specialises in French treats that are affordably priced. Popular choices include Opera Cake ($6.90), which has almond sponge layered with dark chocolate ganache and coffee buttercream, as well as the highly Instagrammable Mon Cheri ($8.20), a  chocolate mousse and cherry confit entremet shaped like the stone fruit.

5. Lickers

Lickers serves a wide selection of handcrafted ice cream including less mainstream flavours such as Yakult Oreo ($3.80) and Cookie Monster ($3.80). 6. Moments’

A relatively new entrant to the Serangoon cafe scene is Moments’. The interior is airy and decorated with Chinese graphics, but the menu is decidedly local with a dash of Western. Expect breakfast sets that feature toasts and kopi under $5 to kickstart your day, or Western mains, from grilled platters to steaks, as well as pasta. The Western fare is equally affordable, as you can get an NZ Grassfed Sirloin Steak for only $14.90++, with your choice of sauce.

7. Apollo Coffee Bar 

Serangoon Gardens is home to several cafes, but Apollo Coffee Bar stands out as a longtime fave. Some liken the cafe to those in Bali, while others say it’s a nod to Australian coffee houses. Either way, expect quality cups of coffee, as well as a day and night menu. Their Lemon Curd & Hotcakes ($15.50++) is a popular pick, where diner-style hotcakes are topped with a tart lemon curd. Else, if you’re coming by for dinner, they’ve got fusion mains served from 5pm onwards, including a Wagyu Cheeseburger ($21.40++), and Chorizo Squid Risotto ($23.50++).

Get your ice cream and waffles fix at Pints & Cones, where they serve up unique thyme waffles, as well as freshly churned ice cream. The Signature Waffle with a Single Scoop Flavour Gelato ($7.30) is an easy choice as you get to pick from a variety of their signature ice cream flavours, including Banana Biscoff, which tastes like a speculoos-packed banana cake. As for the thyme waffles, look forward to fragrant, aromatic waffle squares that are slightly savoury, but not overpowered by the herb.

9. The Better Scoop 

Another ice cream and waffles joint worth checking out is The Better Scoop, a quick walk from Serangoon MRT Station. The cafe specialises in Nian Gao Waffles ($6.80++), made with a buttermilk batter laced with nian gao. Aside from waffles and gelato, they also do specialty drinks, including a Pei Pa Koa Latte With Peach Gum ($6.50), flavoured with actual pei pa koa syrup.

While they serve brunch, they’ve also got a lunch menu available from 11am. They’re famous for their jaffles, AKA Aussie-style grilled cheese sandwiches, as well as open-faced sourdough toasts.

New Peranakan restaurant and cafe Babba recently opened in Jalan Riang, with a multi-concept menu. You get brunch from 8am to 4pm, pre-dinner snacks from 4pm to 6pm, then dinner from 6pm to 10pm. If you’re heading down early for brunch, you can choose to build your own breakfast (from $8++), or get their elevated Homemade Kaya Butter Toast & Eggs ($12++), served with crispy, fresh-made brioche, and a coconutty kaya. Award-winning homegrown coffee roastery Dutch Colony Coffee Co. was established in Pasarbella, before moving into their own space along Frankel Avenue. The small cafe offers a variety of coffees, including beans you can purchase to make your own brews at home. They’ve also got a wall of specialty coffee equipment you can buy too. If you’re just there for breakfast and a good cuppa, they’ve got a menu full of breakfast staples, from the classic Breakfast Platter ($19++) to House Pancakes ($15++), served with blueberry jam.

Joji’s Diner is one of the more eye-catching cafes on the list, thanks to their all-American interior, and diner menu. The cafe’s walls are lined with records, while the checkered floor is dotted cherry red vinyl seats, and even a  jukebox machine. Aside from your usual breakfast platters, Joji’s Diner also offers American bites such as Chicken & Waffles ($12.90++), and  Mac & Cheese ($7.90++).

This pet-friendly Serangoon cafe is situated just outside of the main Serangoon Gardens area and has drawn regular customers for its super affordable prices. Most of their dishes are just under $15, from Beef Shakshuka ($14+) to seafood pastas. Beyond just allowing pets in the cafe, Sun Ray also offers a pet menu, offering Puppucinos ($2+), and even a Happy Paw Bento Set ($10+), which comes with veg, fruits, scrambled eggs, rice, and your choice of protein.

16. Urban Table 

Urban Table is a minimalistic Serangoon cafe run by Koreans. They’ve got a lean menu of pastries and breakfast items, though the cafe is really best known for their coffee, as the space doubles as a micro-roastery. The interiors are also spacious, with ample seating—great for those WFH days when you need a change of scenery, and prefer to work out of a cafe.

17. Oblong

Oblong has been a Serangoon Gardens mainstay for desserts, especially late at night as the cafe opens till 1am over the weekend. They were a pioneer of red velvet waffles, priced at $12 with ice cream, and your choice of syrup. If you’re not big on red velvet, don’t fret, as they have normal buttermilk waffles too, as well as other flavoured options, from Cookies & Cream ($13) to Milo Crunch ($14).

18. Baker & Cook 

Nestled at the edge of Serangoon Gardens is Baker & Cook, a popular brunch cafe and bakery for those living in the area. On the food menu is a handful of the usual brunch suspects, both sweet and savoury, from Eggs Benedict ($16++) and French Toast ($18.90++). Most orders come with bread that is freshly baked daily in-house, but if you want to try out the full selection fresh from the oven, we recommend the Bread Basket ($11++), which serves two, and comes with butter and jam.
